RTA Next is a public-input process to develop a new regional transportation improvement plan for the Regional Transportation Authority of Pima County.
The original Regional Transportation Authority plan passed in 2006, starting a 20-year timeline for funding more than $2 billion in transportation improvements. With the clock ticking, development of a new plan to fund a new generation of improvements is underway.
To develop a new plan, the RTA Board created a citizens’ advisory committee. Working under direction from the board, which provided a budget, timeline and other priorities, the committee has been developing a draft plan proposal.
The plan will include roadway corridor, transit, and safety improvements. In addition, the plan will include elements like economic vitality, environmental protection and multimodal pathways.
The RTA Board may later decide to put the plan on the ballot for public approval.
The RTA half-cent sales tax provides more than $110 million per year toward transportation improvements. The RTA Next plan would continue funding transportation system improvements with more than $2 billion in new RTA revenue over another 20 years.
