New funding for Sunset Road will enable construction this year

The Regional Transportation Authority roadway corridor project to build a new segment of Sunset Road between Interstate 10 and River Road is moving forward with new federal funding.

The project has received funding from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021. The act provided funding for Highway Infrastructure Programs. Combined with federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funding, the PAG planning area received nearly $7.6 million in new funding that was made available to program into its Transportation Improvement Program for fiscal year 2022.

In accordance with previous direction from the Regional Transportation Authority Board to program all available regional funding for remaining RTA projects, a call for submissions resulted in the RTA Sunset Road project receiving CRRSAA and STBG funding.

These additional funds will be used to construct a new Sunset Road connection with Interstate 10 and extend Sunset northeast to connect to River Road. Because funding is now secured for the Sunset project, the road will be constructed in conjunction with an Arizona Department of Transportation project to widen I-10 between Ina Road and Ruthrauff/El Camino del Cerro.

Construction is slated to begin by the end of 2022.
