Houghton Road is one of the longest corridor improvement projects in the voter-approved Regional Transportation Authority plan. One phase of this 13-mile long project is the three-mile section from 22nd Street to Irvington Road.
The City of Tucson is managing the voter-approved RTA project. The Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility and the RTA are holding a virtual public meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will include a presentation about project design, schedule and public art, followed by a question and answer session. Improvements include widening the roadway to six lanes with a median, new drainage structures, bike lanes, sidewalks, bus pullouts and public art.
Earlier phases of Houghton Road improvements that are complete include the Old Vail Road/Mary Ann Cleveland Way intersection, Irvington Road to Valencia Road, Broadway Boulevard to 22nd Street, the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and from the UPRR tracks to Interstate 10. The stretch of roadway from Valencia Road to Mary Ann Cleveland Way is under construction. Design and construction on the Tanque Verde Road to Speedway Boulevard phase are not yet scheduled.
