A Worthwhile Investment: Community continues to see benefits of RTA plan

It’s been almost 20 years since voters approved the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan, and in that time we’ve covered a lot of ground and travelled many miles.

With 2024 at a close, this year’s RTA annual report, titled “A Worthwhile Investment,” focuses on the many benefits our community has experienced since the plan was put into action.

Since 2006, when Pima County voters said yes to the $2.2 billion plan, the RTA has overseen the delivery of more than 1,000 transportation improvements in every corner of our region, making the most of the community’s investment in transportation to improve connectivity and economic vitality for all.

The report shows how over 18 years, the RTA plan has provided more than $1.6 billion for transportation improvements that have enhanced regional roadway corridors to ease congestion, expanded transit services to allow more residents to access fixed-route and special-needs services, increased bicycle and pedestrian facilities to make alternative modes of transportation more convenient, added new traffic signal technologies to improve safety, and constructed wildlife linkages to protect Sonoran Desert animals from traffic.

The community’s investment in the RTA also has to date helped to leverage more than $2 billion in public and private investments while creating thousands of short- and long-term jobs in the community.

The RTA 2024 Annual Report also provides updates on some major roadway corridor projects currently underway in the region, including:

  • Tangerine Road, Interstate 10 to Marana Tech Drive
  • Silverbell Road, Goret Road to El Camino del Cerro
  • Sunset Road connection to River Road
  • Downtown Links
  • Grant Road, Palo Verde Blvd. to Venice Place.

In addition, the report highlights the projects completed over 18 years, including:

  • 202 intersection improvements
  • 164 pedestrian crossings
  • 180 bus pullouts
  • 183 miles of sidewalks
  • 370 miles of bike lanes
  • 18 completed roadway corridors.
