The Regional Transportation Authority helps fund, plan, and build transportation projects across Pima County. It manages a 20-year transportation plan approved by voters and oversees the tax money collected in Pima County to help pay for the plan.
2026 RTA Plan
On March 10, 2026, Pima County voters approved a new $2.67 billion 20-year transportation plan funded by a sales tax.
The new plan builds on the work the RTA did from 2006 to 2026.
The new plan has five primary elements:
- Roadway (Multimodal) Corridor
- Safety, ADA and Active Transportation
- Arterial and Collector Roads, Pavement Rehabilitation
- Environmental
- Transit (including paratransit and dial-a-ride)
These projects will reduce traffic, improve safety, and give people more affordable ways to get around.
The first five years of the new plan include seven road projects carried over from the 2006 plan. The RTA is working with local governments to finish these projects in the next five years, along with starting new projects.
Bus and transit services funded by the 2006 plan will keep running. The new plan will also expand transit over time. RTA funds Sun Tran buses (including evening and weekend service), the Sun Link streetcar, and Sun Shuttle neighborhood and paratransit rides.
Other projects will be chosen through requests from local governments and public input, reviewed by RTA committees, and approved by the RTA Board. as well as review through the RTA committee process and a final decision by the RTA Board.
2006 RTA Plan
The first RTA plan was approved by Pima County voters in 2006. It was a $2.1 billion plan that ended March 31, 2026, after voters approved the new plan.
The 2006 plan aimed to reduce traffic, improve safety, and give people more ways to get around. It was created with input from local, county, state, and tribal governments, and from the public.
By March 2026, more than 1,050 projects were completed. Seven projects moved to the new plan for additional funding or scope changes. Some remaining 2006 projects will finish after 2026 using reserve funds.
