Established in 1980 with Pima County and transferred to the RTA in 2011, RTA Special Needs Transit provides door-to-door paratransit service to persons with disabilities living outside the Tucson city limits or City of Tucson residents needing to reach destinations outside the city limits.
RTA Special Needs Transit service is provided by Handicar, a private company holding the service contract with the RTA. Handicar operates a fleet of small cut-away and extended vans, which are fully equipped to load and unload wheelchair passengers of all ages and abilities. In fiscal year 2010-11, RTA Special Needs Transit provided 120,000 passenger trips throughout the greater Tucson region.
