RTA Accomplishments: FY 2017-2021

During the third implementation period, the RTA reached the following major milestones:

  • Completion of Sunset Road, from Silverbell to River roads, including a bridge over the Santa Cruz River.
  • Design completed for a new Ruthrauff Road and Interstate 10 interchange.
  • Construction began on the widening of Broadway Road, from Camino Seco to Houghton Road.
  • Construction is nearing completion on new twin bridges over the Union Pacific Railroad on Houghton Road as part of the Houghton Road corridor improvement project, from Tanque Verde Road to I-10.
  • Construction began on the new Ina Road and I- 10 interchange.
  • Colossal Cave Road Improvements - Completed

RTA Accomplishments: FY 2012-2016

During the second implementation period, the RTA reached the following major milestones:

  • A groundbreaking on the intersection of Grant and Oracle roads was held July 26, 2012, to begin the first phase of the Grant Road project, Oracle to Swan roads, the largest roadway project in the RTA plan. The intersection includes a Michigan left turn lane, or express turn lane, that improves safety and traffic flow through the intersection.
  • The completion of Speedway Boulevard, Camino Seco to Houghton Road, corridor improvement project, was celebrated with a ribbon cutting on July 11, 2012. The roadway was widened to four lanes and includes new bike lanes and sidewalks.
  • Construction for the $20.6 million Kino Parkway and 22nd Street elevated intersection project kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony on June 21, 2012.
  • Construction on Sahuarita Road, La Villita to Country Club roads, started in May 2012.
  • The Sun Link modern streetcar launched service on July 25, 2014, with service along a 3.9-mile track that runs from the west side of downtown Tucson through Fourth Avenue and University Boulevard to the University of Arizona Health Sciences campus. Sun Link celebrated its 4 millionth passenger in September 2018.
  • The $13.2 million La Canada Drive, Ina Road to Calle Concordia, roadway improvement project was completed on Oct. 1, 2011. The project included widening to four lanes, drainage improvements and new multi-use lanes.
  • The $19 million La Cholla Boulevard, River to Ruthrauff roads, corridor widening project was dedicated on Sept. 9, 2011. The roadway was widened to six lanes, and the project included a new bridge over the Rillito River, new bike lanes and new sidewalks.
  • Oracle Road/Ina Road Intersection Improvement Project - Completed

RTA Accomplishments: FY 2007-2011

During the first implementation period, the RTA reached the following major milestones:

  • Completion of the Twin Peaks Interchange and Road (formerly Camino de Manana) in Marana.
  • Completion of the I-19 frontage road between Continental and Canoa roads in Green Valley.
  • Completion of the Houghton/Old Vail intersection as part of the initial phase of the Houghton Road corridor project in Tucson. 
  • Completion of the first phase of Sahaurita Road, between I-19 and La Villita, in Sahuarita.
  • Sun Tran expanded its evening and weekend transit service on a total of 44 routes.
  • Sun Tran added or enhanced seven express bus routes.
  • New Sun Shuttle neighborhood transit service included 11 routes in operation.
  • The City of Tucson received a $63 million grant in February 2010 from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help fund its portion of the cost of the modern streetcar project, a $150 million project approved by voters as part of the RTA plan.
  • Establishment of the MainStreet Small Business Assistance Program, which logged 20,000+ business outreach and ombudsman visits with 4,000+ businesses on 31 regional projects and provided confidential business consulting services to over 240 companies. 
  • Determination of the alignment for the RTA's largest roadway project ($167 million) on Grant Road.
  • Completion (October 2009) of the first phase of a new Sun Tran Bus Storage and Maintenance Facility.
  • Construction began on the following intersection projects: Oracle and Ina roads; Starr Pass Boulevard and Mission Road, and Golf Links and Kolb roads.
  • Construction began on the following roadway projects: Downtown Links: I-10 to Church and 8th St. drainage; Grant Road: Oracle/Grant intersection; Houghton Road: Irvington to Valencia and Houghton/Broadway intersection; Kolb Road connection with Sabino Canyon: Sabino Canyon/Tanque Verde intersection; La Canada: Calle Concordia to River; La Cholla: River to Ruthrauff and Magee to Tangerine; Magee Road/Cortaro Farms Road: La Canada to Mona Lisa and Mona Lisa to Thornydale; Speedway Blvd.: Camino Seco to Houghton; Tanque Verde Road: Houghton to Catalina Highway.
