Now in its 14th year of plan implementation, the Regional Transportation Authority, or RTA, is well on its way to the final stretch of plan delivery. The 20-year, voter-approved regional transportation plan is on schedule and delivering the projects as identified in the May 16, 2006, ballot. The plan and half-cent excise tax that funds the plan are currently effective through June 30, 2026.

RTA Funding

Projects of the $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority plan are funded by a half-cent transaction privilege tax (also known as an excise tax), which was approved by Pima County voters in May 2006. The half-cent excise tax is collected from the state-established RTA special taxing district within Pima County to deliver projects in the RTA plan.

Currently, the tax will continue through June 30, 2026. The 20-year plan (FY 2007-26)  includes road, transit, safety, and environmental and economic vitality projects.

The Regional Transportation Authority, an independent local government, is managed by Pima Association of Governments.

RTA Projects


The RTA has delivered nearly 850 project improvements and services including:

  • 69 pedestrian crossings
  • 132 bus pullouts
  • 185 intersection improvements
  • 161 miles of sidewalks
  • 303 miles of bike lanes

The Tucson City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement in April 2016 with the RTA to move forward on 30% Design Plans for the Broadway Boulevard, Euclid to Country Club, improvement project. This RTA project is managed by the City of Tucson and will widen Broadway to six lanes from Euclid to Country Club, with bike lanes, sidewalks and bus pullouts.
